Díli, Timor-Leste 27/09/2011 10:38 (LUSA)
Dili, 27 Sept (Lusa) – The Secretary General for the Revolutionary Fornt for an Independent Timor-Leste (FRETILIN), Mari Alkatiri, today said that there can be “some concerns” with the security situation, but underscored that the country has changed because his party has guaranteed peace and stability for the current government.
“In a country like ours, that has only recently traversed a crisis, it is good to remain concerned so that contingency measures can be taken in case something does happen,” said Mari Alkatiri in statements to Lusa Agency.
The Secretary Genral of FRETILIN saliented, all in all, that the “country has also changed a lot since 2006 till now, especially since 2007/2008, because fundamentally those who are now governing are doing so in a situation of peace and stability because FRETILIN has guranteed this peace and stability.”
For Mari Alkatiri, it is fundamental that “the results of the next election are respected and that whoever wins the elections really governs and whoever remains in opposition continues to be an opposition that favors peace and stability.
“Whether in opposition or in government everyone should work towards consolidating the absolutely necessary conditions to progress the development of the nation,” he said.
“Those who used violence in 2006 as political tools and who are now in power are those to whom I ask to continue to be coherent and that they not revert to doing the same as they did in 2006 and 2007 in case they lose the 2012 elections,” he said, without naming anyone.
Mari Alkatiri underscored that he does not believe that “there is climate for this.”
“I do not believe that the objective conditions exist to do this because the people are tired of violence, the people are tired of conflicts, the people want a healthy competition at the political level and with democratic values,” he said.
The legislative and presidential elections will be held in 2012.
Alkatiri said also that his party agrees with the exit of the United nations Integrated Mission and Australian and New Zealand Forces at the end of next year.
“We feel that in December of 2012 not only should the UN forces, but also the Australian and New Zealand peace keeping forces should leave the country and leave the country to govern itself in the area od defense and security,” he affirmed.
But according to the FRETILIN Secretary General, in order “for this to happen it is neccesary that all Timorese know how to adopt a posture as citizens of an independent nation.”
Alkatiri saliented that this exit should be done with a “certain measure of care.”
“It is good that the government confirm this signature. Because those who signed it have only a few months left in power,” he said.
The government, the President of the Republic and the UN last week signed a Transtional Plan, that foresees the end of the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste.
Under the plan, it will be a matter for the government, to decide in June 2012 on the type of United Nations Mission that will be present in the country after 2013.
